What Is LegitScript Certification and Why Do Treatment Centers Need It?

If you want to run Google Ads for your treatment center, you need LegitScript certification first. No certification, no ads. Google made this a requirement in 2018 after the opioid crisis exposed widespread abuse of search advertising by illegitimate treatment operators.

Here is what it means for you.

What LegitScript Actually Is

LegitScript is a third-party verification company that reviews healthcare businesses for legitimacy, licensing, and regulatory compliance. Google partnered with them to create a certification program specifically for addiction treatment providers.

When you apply for LegitScript certification, they verify that your facility is properly licensed in your state, that your clinical staff holds appropriate credentials, that your marketing materials are not deceptive, and that your facility operates in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Once certified, you receive a LegitScript seal and your Google Ads account is unlocked for addiction treatment advertising. Without this certification, Google will reject any ad that promotes addiction treatment services.

Who Needs It

Any facility that wants to run Google search ads for addiction treatment, substance abuse treatment, or detox services. This includes residential treatment centers, outpatient programs offering addiction services, detox facilities, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinics.

Mental health facilities that do not treat substance use disorders generally do not need LegitScript certification to advertise on Google. However, if your facility offers dual diagnosis treatment — meaning you treat both mental health and substance use — you likely need certification for any advertising that references the substance use component.

The Application Process

The application takes 2 to 4 weeks from submission to approval, though it can take longer if LegitScript requests additional documentation.

You will need to provide your state license and accreditation documentation, clinical staff credentials, a description of your treatment programs, your facility address and contact information, and your website URL.

LegitScript reviews your website as part of the certification process. If your website makes outcome guarantees ("we will cure your addiction"), uses misleading before-and-after claims, or references treatments not supported by evidence, your application may be denied or delayed.

The cost is typically $1,000 to $2,000 per year depending on your facility size and the specific certification tier.

What Happens After Certification

Getting certified is step one. Running compliant ads is step two — and it is where most facilities struggle.

Even with LegitScript certification, Google has additional advertising policies that can get your ads disapproved. Common reasons include ad copy that references specific substances by name in certain ways, landing pages that do not clearly identify the facility and its license, call-only ads that route to call centers instead of the certified facility, and remarketing campaigns that target users based on health conditions.

These policy violations do not revoke your LegitScript certification, but they prevent your ads from running — which means you are paying for certification and getting no advertising value from it.
